I’m all about the E53 X5 4.8is. The design of the first generation X5 is definitely polarizing, but I like it a lot. The rear is a deeply Germanic answer to following question... Jurgen: “How do we design our first SUV rear end?” Dieter: “Simple. We stretch the E46 wagon hatch.”
See what I mean? Some think it’s ugly, but I think it’s funny. That sums up my taste in cars pretty well.
It was essentially the X5M before that car existed. The “is” badge has vintage Bavarian pedigree, which is a fun bonus if you’re a BMW nerd. The 20 inch wheels are insanely wide, giving it an aggressive stance from the rear. They’re a nice design too. I also like the front. Normally I’m not a fan of shiny kidneys but they look good here.
Finally, they sound great stock:
And NUTS with an exhaust. The Dinan option will even knock your camera over:
So Oppo, which ridiculous “performance” SUVs are you into? These only have ~350 HP and TQ so they’re not that fast by modern standards.

1st generation E53 X5s are pretty good vehicles with M54s or M62s, and as the owner of an E46 Touring, I approve of the styling correlation. If I were forced at gunpoint to actually admit have a favorite performance SUV, I’d pick a 4.8L Cayenne S.

Terribly fast?

Not technically an SUV, I suppose, but it shared a platform (and factory) with two SUVs, so maybe.

For me, that’d be the road going version of the Bowler Nemesis, the Bowler EXR S. 550bhp 5.0 V8.

To be honest its only the X5M I like in this category. I think this category is patently stupid but I like looking at the 1st gen X5M’s from the rear...those tires!

MOPAR OR NO CAR.

I tried to talk my wife into one of these - it was almost as nice to drive as the CTS-V we were replacing, but the back seats (which aren’t actually even available in the M version) are ridiculously small.
I also love the RR Sport:
Especially this special SVR from a company called Lumma:
I don’t love the green accents, especially on the splitter, but look at that rear end!
And I LOVE that it has actual real off-road chops in addition to awesome on-road performance (though I’ll admit the body kit on this one may pose some problems off road).

Trailblazer SS or Range Rover Sport SVR. If Cadillac every gives the Escalade the V treatment that’ll win my heart no doubt.

+1 on basically any range rover. Personally, I’d add the ludicrous and stupid G-Wagon AMG.

Not nearly as bad as the lead X5

I SAID, THE SS WAS TERRIBLE..
PROBABLY COULDN’T HEAR ME OVER THE RUSTED OUT EXHAUST AND NICKELBACK COMING FROM IT..

Were those bad beyond just the looks? I never see old ones come to think of it...

The Range Rover sport svr
542 bhp and a 0-60 time that will worry Aston Martins
![]() 06/01/2017 at 17:13 |

Yep, I like those X5s too - all generations of that car did a good job.
My favorite performance SUV is probably the Range Rover Overfinch though- but only up to this gen (the later ones got a bit tasteless):
Honorable mentions to the LM002, Syclone, G-Klasse AMG, Forester STI and Pajero Evolution.

I want one of these. Even a S would satisfy me TBH.

Yup, 4.8is. I regret not buying one when I had the chances. God I love the E53 X5

My answer too. GTS or Turbo.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 17:58 |

I’m all about it! Especially if you can spec one to look like a standard GC. I have an irrational hatred of black wheels (unpopular opinion) and more importantly, because sleeper.

I’d be down with a later gen X5M too, especially with exhaust dumps + a downpipe so it makes turbo whistle spaceship noises.

I’m all about range rover sports. Best looking SUV out there IMO.

The new Cayenne looks great. Especially from the rear.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:00 |

This would be hilarious to squeeze more power out of but leave stock. Drag strip sleeper!
![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:01 |

Ah yes the overfinch, one of only a few RR aftermarket companies I’m down with. These are such handsome cars, future classics even IMO once nice ones are scarce and it’s old enough to look “classic”

Those Porsche V8s sound SO good stock, it’s really surprising.

![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:02 |

The SVR is insane. One was tearing around Boston the other day, I heard it from at least a 1/4 mile away

Rightly so.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:04 |

Agreed! Love me some MOPAR. Though I’d like a Grand Cherokee with a big Hemi instead, these are great looking cars IMO.

![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:05 |

They’re still around from what I’ve seen, but usually beaten up to an extent or too expensive for a 15 year old SUV if they have low miles.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:07 |
|
The FluidMotorUnion exhaust also sounds nutty
![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:09 |

Yeah, the refresh really helped it, especially the lights. I don’t like the new GTS rear bumper garnish, but if that’s my biggest complaint they’ve done well.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:13 |

If I would have to pick, its going to be the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8, post bk though. The first gen was cheap.
In all honesty though? None of them. They are a contradiction. Nothing with a high center of gravity should be having as much power as they do, nor the ability to coroner and go those speeds. Its like someone asking for a roomy Smart car.

A fembot in the back seat?
![]() 06/01/2017 at 18:43 |

Ye’, you had the Nemesis which is the serious rally car, the EXR was a bit more regular rally car and the EXR S which was the road going version but still very capable off road.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 19:04 |

Honestly, I like too many of them.

I’ve seen this thing all over the internet! So dope.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 19:34 |

It’s such a massive step up from the original, much like the Panamera. I bet there was an “OK no more ugly cars, everyone hates our four doors” meeting at some point...
![]() 06/01/2017 at 19:37 |

The way I see it, the only “practical” purpose is for an enthusiast who wants a ton of space for cargo/kids but doesn’t want a wagon (hard to find fast ones, especially in the USA). The power is for highway passing and the “good” handling is for those times when you unintentionally find yourself on a fun road in the family hauler. I’m sure all German SUVs handle better than my car, that’s for sure.

Elon does know how to party! So maybe...
![]() 06/01/2017 at 19:40 |

Me too. Realistically, I like them all because I like ridiculous cars. And sleepers.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 19:41 |

See if Americans hadn’t bought into this idea that SUV/CUV’s do things better than cars and wagons do, which they don’t, we would have more performance wagons, and things like the Dodge Magnum would still be around. Instead I’m stuck with the Durango SRT with way more space than I would need and gas mileage that will probably make a Ram 3500 blush.

seen that too! Sounds nuts.
![]() 06/01/2017 at 20:55 |
|
Of course the X6M, but perhaps even more so the extra ridiculous X6 M50d
Yes, they’re garish and not the most attractive but that’s why I love it.
“It’s not as practical as the X5!” yeah well neither is the absurd engine and chassis engineering in either of these vehicles lol

One of my high school friends had parents who were into fast cars. His mother is a very short, sweet looking woman who works in corporate finance. I saw her around town in a blue one just like that recently! So funny. I’m sure jaws drop when she steps out.
